On the Road Again

We set out early Saturday morning "On the Road Again",  listening to the CD that Christina gave me for my birthday, labeled "Road Trip",   She put together a great collection of songs to keep us entertained along the way.  She's just posted the whole list, so check out her post for the details: http://packedsuitcase.com/2012/08/road-trip-playlist.html.

Within an hour of leaving Kansas City the sky started darkening and within another 30 minutes it looked like it was dusk instead of 9 AM. I had no idea that we would become storm chasers on our trip, or rather, being chased by an ominous storm.  It looked like a derichio to me!!!  There was lightning, wind, hail, and the threat of a tornado.  Great!  And here we are pulling our little camper being blown all over the place trying to out run the storm.

Finally by Sioux City we had outrun the storm, however, even though the weather cleared up, high winds prevailed the rest of the day.  As we traveled further into South Dakota, we noticed an interesting crop that we don't grow in Maryland that is grown out here is sunflowers.  There are many fields of sunflowers with their bright yellow faces, all facing the same direction-east.  Very strange, but very pretty.  While other crops weren't doing too well, the sunflowers looked great.

We made it to our campground by 4 PM with plenty of daylight.  Using my new all-in-one watch, I timed our setup of the camper and within 20 minutes of pulling into our site, we were setup and having a drink in our camp chair.  Not bad for novice campers.

We were able to take a walk into Wall and then explore the loop drive in the Badlands, NP .  Our campground is conveniently near the west entrance.  It's a very rugged landscape.  We saw our first signs of wildlife as soon as we entered the park.  Pronghorn antelope, big horn sheep and a coyote .  Not an easy park to photo at dusk so we will try again tomorrow when we hike through the Badlands.
